VIP Soccer

Playing Kick the Ball

Ever since I first heard about VIP Soccer, I was excited about getting my son involved.  Michael has Autism, seizures and a long list of other problems too.  Michael turned four and I couldn’t wait for him to have the opportunity to play soccer.  Imagine that, a soccer team just for him.  He has been on the soccer fields since he was a baby and now it was his turn to be included in sports, more importantly our favorite sport, soccer.  I took him out on the field for his first practice and held on tight because he is an escape risk.  He dragged his feet and threw himself down screaming loudly.  I made him stand and dropped the ball at his feet.  I started singing the ABC song.  He screamed louder.  I sang louder and dragged him through the weave poles.  He jerked free and ran to an enormous mud puddle and threw himself into it.  That was the end of his first practice!  I might add that before Michael, I never thought I would be singing nursery songs in public, but our lives changed dramatically when he came into our lives.  I was a little disappointed after his first practice.  I don’t know what I expected; I just wanted him to have a normal moment and a chance to play a sport.  The second practice started pretty much the same as the first.  There was lots of screaming and dropping to the ground by him and lots of nursery rhyme singing by me.  Tears slid down my cheeks as I realized he might never be capable of playing sports.  He definitely wasn’t ready yet and the songs that usually soothed him weren’t working at all.  Suddenly Coach Paul was at our side.  In a firm steady voice he said, “Michael, kick the ball.”  Michael lifted his leg and kicked the ball.  That day, he kicked the ball over and over.  It was the first time Michael had ever followed a command and I was blown away!  I had been ready to give up, but there we were, out there on the field with a variety of differently-abled children kicking soccer balls.  Our first game was fun!  The entire season was a blast!   Now, whenever Michael sees a game of soccer, he says, “Kick the ball.”  We say yes, Michael, “kick the ball and he smiles.  We all know he can kick the ball and be part of a team like his brothers and sister.  What a unique opportunity AYSO offers us with VIP.  If you know any children like Michael, please spread the word.  It is an incredible experience for children with special needs like my son.
